Welcome to the Beyond Baseline Newsletter 🚀
This is where we explore human flourishing, performance, and the biological and psychological fundamentals that underpin it.
From deep work at the BetterMan Awakening Retreat to a room filling for the Showcase at Crossbasket Castle, and a deeper dive into sleep science this week, everything we are building right now centres on one thing: helping people move forward with clarity and intention.
Let me bring you into it.
NOW & NEXT 🗓️
The BetterMan Showcase: 15 Tickets Remaining
We are less than two weeks away from the BetterMan Showcase, and we have exactly 15 tickets left.

Too many men are sleepwalking through life. Busy, capable, ambitious, but without real intention. Without a conscious vision for who they are becoming and what they are building. Without a room full of people who genuinely push them forward.
The BetterMan Showcase is designed to change that.
I am bringing together some of the most influential, interesting people I know, entrepreneurs, performance experts, and individuals who have navigated real adversity to share what has shaped them. Their business stories. Their resilience journeys. Their psychological tools. You will also hear directly from BetterMan members about their own transformations.
It will be a full day of challenge, insight, and connection. A growth zone, not a comfort zone.
This is for men who are ambitious, health-conscious or health-curious, and serious about building a stronger version of themselves in 2026.
If you are reading this and thinking of someone who fits that description, send it to them. Sometimes the most important decisions we make are the ones that pull someone else forward with us.
IMPACT & INSIGHTS 💡
The Awakening Retreat: When Ambitious Men Stop Doing It Alone
Last weekend, we delivered the BetterMan Awakening Retreat in Northumberland: two days of deep, focused work across biology, psychology, and identity.
No distractions. No small talk. Just serious men doing serious work on themselves.

The energy in the room was something I do not take for granted. What happens when ambitious men stop isolating themselves and come together in an environment built for growth is genuinely powerful.
This is something I see time and again: driven professionals and entrepreneurs carrying enormous weight in silence. Getting caught up inside their own heads. Feeling alone in challenges that, as it turns out, are not theirs alone at all.
When men allow themselves to be in these environments, something unlocks. You witness vulnerability from others, and it gives you permission to open up yourself. To share what you have been carrying. To stop taking your challenges so personally and start finding real solutions within them. To see men who have overcome even greater obstacles and realise: this is possible for me too.

That collective resilience, that sense of not being alone in your pursuit, is something no amount of individual effort can replicate.
RESEARCH CORNER 🧪
Sleep Science: Going Deeper
Sleep is one of the most powerful performance variables we have, and every time we go deep on it, the response is strong. So this week, let’s go deeper.
At the retreat, we spent a full session on sleep optimisation and its relationship to performance and leadership. Here are a few of the things that genuinely surprised people in the room.
1. Sleep Architecture & Alcohol
Most people know alcohol disrupts sleep. But most do not know how.
Alcohol suppresses REM sleep, the stage responsible for emotional processing, memory consolidation, and creative problem solving. You may appear to fall asleep faster. You are actually sedating yourself, not sleeping. But you are robbing your brain of the sleep it needs to process the day, regulate emotions, and show up sharp the next morning.
This matters enormously for leaders.
2. Orthosomnia & Cognitive Offloading
Here is something we are seeing emerge with real frequency: orthosomnia. The anxiety that develops when people become obsessed with achieving a perfect sleep score on their wearable.
Whoop. Oura ring. Apple Watch. These tools can be genuinely valuable. But when you begin delegating your sense of wellbeing to a data point on a screen, the device can create the very anxiety it was meant to reduce. Sleep worsens.
This forms part of a broader issue: cognitive offloading. The more we outsource self-awareness to technology, the more our somatic intelligence atrophies. That natural ability to read yourself. To recognise your patterns. To know when you need rest before a device tells you. That is a skill. And like any skill, if you stop using it, you lose it
3. How To Use Wearables Well
The message is not to throw your wearables away. These tools can be beneficial. But they should be used in focused sprints of six to twelve weeks.
Pick one variable to optimise. A supplement. Blue-light blocking glasses. Temperature regulation. A sleep stack. Track the data and observe how that variable moves your score. Over six to twelve weeks, you build personalised insight into what works for your body.
Then check in with how you actually feel. Never downgrade subjective experience. Once you have gathered the knowledge, detach. Let your body’s intelligence take over.
That is how you use data without allowing it to erode the very intelligence it was meant to support.
Your body knows things your watch does not. The goal is to use technology to sharpen awareness, not replace it.
COMMUNITY INSIGHT ✨
A Note on BetterWoman
I have been getting asked increasingly, are you going to do a BetterWoman retreat? A BetterWoman day?
The short answer is: not in the way you might expect.
BetterMan is a dedicated space for men. I know what it is to be a man, and it feels most authentic to me to focus my in-person work there.
But Beyond Baseline is for everyone.
The plan, coming very soon, is to bring that knowledge to a much wider audience through the Ross Anderson YouTube channel - which will cover all things Beyond Baseline, BetterMan and more - online courses, and in the future, a book.
The science of human performance, sleep, neuroscience, positive psychology, and everything in between, that is what Beyond Baseline is built to deliver. For anyone who wants to move beyond their baseline.
Watch this space. More to come very soon.
FINAL WORD
Growth does not happen by accident.
It happens when you choose the right environments, ask better questions, and take ownership of the fundamentals.
Keep going. Keep growing.
Ross
P.S. If you know a man who should be at the Showcase, forward this email. Growth is contagious. Let’s spread it.
Stay tuned for more updates, insights, and ways to push beyond your baseline every week.
Until next time,
